West Lodge Primary School

We helped transform the dining room environment from being ‘hectic and noisy’ said the Deputy Headteacher into a restaurant where children are socialising, they are clearing up after each other and they are interacting with cooks so much more. To help the school create this vision, as part of their positive lunchtime SEF, we ran positive behaviour training for Supervisors, a whole school consultation day and prepared resources including a seating plan and a lunchtime charter.

Hermitage Primary School

Before we made the dining room changes “our main aim was to get children through as quickly as possible, get them served as quickly as possible and get them out as quickly as possible and it wasn’t working” said the Headteacher, Elaine D’ Souza. In the playground over 40 white slips per term – for hurting, hitting and striking out – were being recorded. We ran positive behaviour training for Midday Supervisors and an INSET day for all school staff. To improve the dining room provision, we launched a new restaurant style dining room. We introduced loose parts (scrap materials) into the playground and we developed whole school behaviour scripts. As a result, white slips reduced by 70% - down from over 40 to only 5 - and Supervisor engagement improved. “Supervisors now communicate with clarity” said Parmjit Varaitch, Deputy Headteacher on “how to de-escalate incidents, to praise good behaviour and if they need to, address poor behaviour.”

Heathrow Primary School

The Headteacher explained that lunchtime was “inadequate” before we made the lunchtimes changes. “The noise in the dining room was astronomical, the food waste was incredible and the children didn’t respect our Supervisors”. To improve lunchtimes, we ran positive behaviour training for Midday Supervisors and a staff twilight for school leaders and classroom teachers. The school extended lunchtimes from one to two hours. It introduced a new restaurant style dining room and Midday Supervisors worked with the school council to develop some lunchtime rules. As a result, behaviour has improved, Midday Supervisors are respected by the children and food waste has reduced from five bags a day to two.

Pebsham Primary Academy

With Pebsham’s noisy and congested dining room directly accounting for lost afternoon learning minutes resolving lunchtime incidents, we conducted training for their Midday Supervisors that lead to a dramatic reduction in these incidents. We also launched a new restaurant style lunchtime called Dine and Shine, which changed the dining room into a calm, social place to eat.

Hormead CE First and Nursery School

The headteacher of this very small school, with less than 40 pupils, wanted to train their two Midday Supervisors because “lunchtimes and their skills were standing out as an area needing improvement”. So, to improve the learning experience, we invited Midday Supervisors from four additional schools in the local area to join our half day positive behaviour session, which was rated ‘excellent’ by all who attended.

Burford CE Primary School, Worcestershire

The acting headteacher at Burford Primary explained that Midday Supervisor engagement with the children needed to be improved. “I would like our supervisors to be consistent with how they deal with certain situations and completion of the training should enable them to do this”, they said. “The behaviour of our pupils is very good, but I feel that the atmosphere in our dining hall needs to be calmer, with all staff striving to achieve the same objective (a calm place to be)”. Our solution was to conduct a one-day training programme for their 7 Midday Supervisors, with impressive outcomes.

Little Common Primary School

For many years at Little Common School, packed lunch eaters had eaten their lunch in the classroom. This was preventing school meal eaters and packed lunch eaters from eating together, teachers from accessing their classrooms and Midday Supervisors from fully engaging with the children. Following consultations with school stakeholders, an action plan was agreed and implemented - with impressive results.

Balfour Primary School

When Balfour Infants and Balfour Juniors were amalgamated to create Balfour Primary, issues were raised about Key Stage 2 lunchtime by the Headteacher. With lengthy queues and a separation of school meal eaters and packed lunch eaters creating a crowded and stressful dining hall, we worked closely with pupils, teachers and Midday Supervisors to agree a series of systemic, and very successful, lunchtime changes.
